MONSTERIZER Update

My final version of Monsterizer won first place in my city’s local newspaper Fall writing contest. You can read the story below.

MONSTERIZER

It started like any ordinary school day. Roy, a typical nine-year-old boy, woke up from his warm, comfy sleep. He stretched, climbed out of bed, and gathered his school clothes. Down the stairs he went. Breakfast was ready and Roy was starving. He wolfed down his waffles in only four bites.   He lazily walked to the bathroom to take his morning shower. When he was finished, Roy called his mom to help him put moisturizer on his naturally curly hair. Mom entered the steamy bathroom and impatiently searched the bathroom cabinets for the black and white moisturizer bottle. Mom squeezed out a handful and slapped it on Roy’s head. Afterwards, Mom noticed she had accidentally picked up an all black bottle “Oh no, this isn’t moisturizer, this says it’s monsterizer!” Roy looked at himself in the bathroom mirror and screamed loudly, “AAAHHHHH!” He had become a hairy, stinky, giant Bigfoot monster.

Roy, in an anxious rage, bolted from the bathroom and checked his reflection in the hall mirror. After nervously touching his hairy body, he screamed to his mother, “What am I going to do?” His mom said, “I don’t know. You can stay home from school today, but tomorrow mister you will definitely have to go.” Then Roy said, “Since when do monsters go to school?”

“Look at it this way, you have an awesome Halloween costume,” explained Mom. After Roy’s mom left for work, he watched several episodes of Tom and Jerry.   While playing his Wii, Roy discovered his monster-like movements helped him excel in boxing. He wasn’t sure what Bigfoot monsters ate for lunch, so he just had his usual of a turkey sandwich, Cheetos, applesauce and a root beer. Then Roy went to read his geography homework.

After doing his homework, Roy went to bed early. His big monster feet were cold as they stuck out from under the sheets. Roy dreamed of terrorizing the city while being a scary monster. He imagined destroying all of the schools. He ran hollering through the libraries. He took all the LEGOs from the department stores and built a multi-colored fortress. Roy tossed and turned and flipped and flopped all night long!

The next morning Roy woke up to thunder and lightning. After his restless slumber, he dragged his hairy monster self into the shower. The water felt cold as it sprinkled down over his body. He got out and dried off. He didn’t call his mom to help him with applying moisturizer. Roy found the black bottle of monsterizer and threw it in the trash. He found the correct bottle of moisturizer, rubbed it in on this hairy head, and went downstairs. His mom noticed Roy was normal and screamed, “You’re not a monster anymore!”   He dashed to the hallway mirror to check himself. Even though he was happy to be a normal being again, he remembered it was a school day.   Roy had a proposition for his mom. He very happily shouted, “YAY, I’m not a hairy, stinky, giant Bigfoot! Does this mean I can stay home from school and celebrate?”
